The signature 'S' to the chest t-shirts distinctly signify IVYinc SOARers, a global community committed to individual and collective power of SERVICE. But during my recent bout with COVID (more on that next month), this same 'S' to the chest took on a whole new meaning, it was my daily dose reminder of the SUPERPOWER we have within.

The life journey is often described as a straight line, there may be peaks and valleys, but people talk about sticking to (one) path. For some of us, the journey is not that straightforward. We are drawn in different directions, and in many areas of interest. Figuring out our purpose isn't as easy, because we are good at many things that do not seem to make a cohesive vision. Instead, it looks like we are picking up little wins here and there that don’t always lead in the same direction.

Society tends to label these people as misfits, but they are the ones who live life to the fullest. The ones exploring all the divine gifts they were given, including those that come naturally. Living an extraordinary life is pretty easy; it is the commitment to use the innate power we have been given to the best of our ability – failing but getting up and trying again.

I've shared previously the story of Anne Purry, a homeless woman I met while living in Minneapolis. Though some people or places in society may have looked down on homeless individuals, Anne had overcome so much in her life and still had a loving and giving nature. She had a profound impact on my life, challenging me to give more and have gratitude for what I had been given. She was my hero; she took on every day as an adventure and taught me to do the same. I may not have been afforded this deep unshakable knowing of GREATER THAN, had my life not encountered Anne. Despite her situation, she used her power and ability to impact and change the lives of everyone she met, including me.

Even my life has been a winding journey. There have been some great opportunities and some disappointments. I learned that paths are the ones that lead us to different valleys, teach us new ways to tap into our hidden power. My journey differed from others, which reminded me that I was created to be uniquely who I am. Some of us are destined to serve through various talents, skills or jobs before we find our true calling. We can't compare our journey to anyone else. Just remember that we are moving towards something greater than.

One of the simplest ways to do this is to celebrate every win, even when it doesn't seem to fit the vision you have in your mind of success. Celebrate the victories in all aspects of your life. Honor even the tiny moments that do not seem like a priority (i.e. outside your career and family), like when you helped a stranger or supported a friend. These random moments show you that you have the power to make a difference. Celebrate the things that make you unique, instead of trying to follow anyone else's path.

As a leader, executive and mentor, I was not exposed to other leaders' zig-zag journeys. I constantly felt like my valleys were unending. I could not see the light, so I fell into a space of isolation and insecurity. I would doubt myself. Others self-sabotage to euthanize their actual feelings. We accept jobs and events within our comfort zone, instead of taking a chance and maximizing the potential of our gifts. In a society that tells people to get what is, I challenge you to see the wins of the so called misfits.

So many people fall into the idea of being less than – existing in less than desirable situations, jobs, relationships, squashing their dreams and passions and living mediocre lives. Instead of exploring their true potential and recognizing that their journey is a chance to grow and try out all the things that excite them. Misfits have this unique power. Even if we try something and decide we don't like it, or it fails, we have already engaged a whole group of people to try it out as well. Sometimes our experiments help others find their path and focus. Keep exploring until dusting yourself off and getting up, again and again, is second nature. My superpower has always been trying more than one thing and making new connections, memories and wins in the most unexpected ways.

So, lean in – those of you who feel like misfits. LEAN IN! Discover and claim the power that comes from being uniquely you. Sometimes the mis had to be there because if you had fit, you would not have continued to pursue new doors and reinvent yourself. You missed fitting into a mold because that mold was not yours. The universe has bigger dreams for you. Live in peace with yourself, knowing that you are where you are meant to be. Don't give up on embracing your superpower, because you are meant to use it and impact the lives of others – just as Anne impacted mine. Discovery is your Superpower!

D.C. Nostalgia

They say life begins outside of your comfort zone; a notion for me that continues to ring true. Thus far, each life opportunity that I've been afforded to embrace has allowed me to grow both personally and professionally. If New York was the city where I sat in the seat of my soul and tapped into my full potential, then D.C. was the place where ...

The valleys may 'feel' unending - but I also learned feelings aren't facts. So if you keep going, you'll see a valley is formed aside EVERY MOUNTAIN. So that road, will lead to a high plane. The key is just to keep going. And while you are moving - you…

Wow. This article was very moving, and oh so timely. I was ”in a way” this morning (over a number of things) to the point where I found myself texting my husband, “it isn’t easy being me”. Always simplistic, his response was, “one in a million”. “Some…

I can totally relate to that! There has been many mis’s in order to find my “fit” which oftentimes leaves us in unfamiliar territory, but it is in the unfamiliar that we find our strength!

THAT PART . . . 'I'm my own super hero!' PRECISELY! We are conditioned to look externally, and we pass opportunities to celebrate our own strengths. You are one of my hero's - the way you pushed through such a tough loss at a critical young age and STI…
