In over 25 years as a strategist, entrepreneur, mentor and global impact leader, I realize I tapped into greatness through a life of service. Now, I want to help other people uncover that same liberating truth that has been a guiding light for my own personal and professional journey. That truth was one I found years ago, and it told me that no matter our personal history or our present circumstances, “greater than” is always within our reach. Today, I write this message to you so that it may be a whisper in your ear that plants a seed in your heart; so that you may understand that the best is yet to come.
I have spent my career as a global connector and ambassador for social change. I’ve traveled the country and the world forging partnerships and spearheading initiatives designed to connect people and organizations to ideas, causes, and resources to tackle the world’s most pressing issues. For more than 20 years, I’ve worked with and consulted respected leaders, heads of state, and members of the United Nations. I share this only to say that I have dedicated my life to speaking to people at every level and understanding their issues, their pain points, and the blockages that keep them from experiencing the greater they hold within.
Over the years of delivering messages, I realized that one thing remained constant no matter where in the world or to whom I was speaking. The questions I received most often from crowds, clients, and mentees seemed to revolve around a feeling of lack. I realized over time that all of these people were connected by the question “am I enough”, so then feeling – less than worthy, less than talented, less than connected, less than capable. This feeling of being “less” caused people to live at a lower capacity. It wasn’t that these people weren’t capable of leading the lives they envisioned for themselves, but that they didn’t feel those lives were possible. This topic became my main focus as I asked myself how I could best empower people to maximize their potential.
Understanding my influence as a mentor within my own community, I decided to start there. While I love speaking and motivating the masses, I also recognize that global change starts on the individual level. To that end, I host weekly meetings every Monday night for my mentorship community, the Global Learners Program. I also lead a diverse, service-based group of over 13,800 members worldwide called the SOARers. In 2020 alone, the SOARers conducted several charitable initiatives to provide relief to families and frontline workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. We’ve provided food for the entire staff of three NYC hospitals (#Food4Frontlines), delivered hot meals to homebound senior citizens, purchased grocery gift cards for 100 families, sent $50 CashApp surprises to 100 single mothers and grandmothers, and purchased and distributed 100 calming blankets for Mental Health Awareness Month (#WrappingThemInCare).
All in all, my mentorship community has proved that one of the fastest and most powerful ways one can tap into their inner “greater than” is through service. Helping your neighbor find their “greater” is a sure-fire way to your own, and it was from this observation that the “Greater Than” movement began. In the midst of an unprecedented era in which a pandemic and national civil unrest left many confused, despondent, angry, and fearful, I embarked on the “Greater Than” movement to help awaken the capacity that lies dormant within so many of us.
Not only will Greater Than answer the call we each feel to live a life of purpose and fulfillment, but it will inspire hope and solidarity on levels we cannot even imagine. My challenge to you is that you find not only inspiration in these words, but action. Take a moment today (and each day after) to stop and ask yourself, what does greater than mean for me? And if I tap into my own greater than, how does my neighbor, my community, and my world benefit as well?
